Well, it's official: Jesse Ventura will not run for Senate. That leaves Al Franken alone to face Norm Coleman. Norm Coleman is an unmitigated disaster as a Senator, so I'll be fighting him tooth and nail. But I'll be holding my nose supporting Franken, and I want to get some stuff off my chest here.
I've always believed that Franken was a flawed candidate. From the first, I believed he was a carpetbagger. Once he finally moved to Minnesota, I regretted the way in which he used his PAC to ingratiate himself with party leaders. But my biggest complaints so far have been about his dismal communication abilities, or lack thereof. Because of his past, he is so easy to tar and feather, yet he has failed to keep the conversation on the issues and away from his own satire. Ultimately, I don't believe he can win this election if he doesn't improve his campaign.
That said, I've discouraged primary challenges to Franken. Now that he's the nominee, I don't see any gain in forcing the party to wait until September to have a nominee. Priscilla Lord Faris has joined the field, but she doesn't seem to be a major concern. So we have to assume Franken is the likely nominee.
From this point forward, I will hold my nose and support Franken. Of course, I will mostly restrict myself to attacking Norm Coleman. Coleman deserves to lose the Senate seat; he is out of touch with Minnesotans and his record shows it.
