It started when the Star Tribune added conservative columnist Katherine Kersten. In an apparent effort to provide "balanced coverage," the Strib began a slow but steady shift to the right. Now, they may as well be a service for re-posting Republican press releases. In today's paper, the Strib shows that it's willing to just take Norm "W" Coleman's word about his living situation in Washington:
The recent controversy over Sen. Norm Coleman's living arrangements in the nation's capital -- downsizing from a luxury apartment to renting a cramped and inexpensive garden-level bedroom from a friend and political ally -- illustrates the problem that keeping two homes can pose for many representatives and senators who aren't independently wealthy. (emphasis added)
Apparently, they are so pressed for staff that they don't have time for real journalism. Instead, they're happy to simply accept anything Coleman writes in his press releases. A little bit of searching would have found the following listing for the house Coleman lives in:
Downstairs, a huge English basement with a media center, office space, gorgeous custom marble and oak bar, plus an airy guest bedroom and bath. (emphasis added, first published by MnPublius)
Coleman's press releases clearly don't match the facts. Of course, it be a lot easier for his constituents to hold him accountable if our corporate media were actually willing to gather those facts.
